Costco We Worship You

We missed Church again this week (three weeks in a row) due to a terrible winter blizzard. Not that the blizzard has kept us cooped up for three weeks, but it has been really cold.

PLUS, Lisa worked a 12-hour shift yesterday, the kids were not fighting, the coffee was tasty, Spongebob Squarepants was extra funny and reading the Sunday paper kept us focused on trumping Church.

So is commercialism and entertainment the new Church? For example, we avoided Church because of the weather (wouldn't want to get stuck in a snow drift and be forced to eat our young :)) but, we're perfectly okay with venturing out into the Overland Park tundra to go to Costco. Wouldn't want to miss the free snacks, good deals and chance to bump into neighbors. Wow, sounds a lot like Sunday service, eh? You go down aisles, see friends, donate money, pray that you don't spend too much and congregate at the snack center to eat $1.50 hotdog/drink combos.

Not to say that Costco is God, "We Worship You Oh Mighty, Costco" but on days like this, sure seems to be taking priority over God. And I'll be the first one to admit that there has been many times that I've found things at Costco that included a Gregorian Chant (Ahhhhhh you must buy meeee, ohhhhhhh) and heavenly glow like the Holy Grail. I am weak.

But I know people who are more weak. I heard that some people actually love the Costco cake so much, that they buy it outside of birthdays and baptisms. They love the cream filling so much that they just "pick up a cake" like other people pick up a loaf of bread at QuikTrip. I'm sure they have even written suggestion letters to the Church asking them to replace the Host with Costco cake.

So while I think that Church is very important, I don't think that God will be too upset that we skipped "in-house" worship for a field trip if you will. Just as long as we "bless us our Lord for these gifts we have received from Costco" tonight at dinner.

God I love Costco.

Love the parallels of the church service, you are right on with that analogy.

See ya at Costco.

There should be some water crackers in the party section that would make good hosts if you wanted to go more lowfat than cake. :)

Duff, I edit nothing. (As you can tell from the number of typos in my posts) What the heck did you say? Blogger must have cut you off.
