Halloween Party 2005

This year we started the trick-or-treat festivities, three weeks before Halloween. So by the time October 31 finally rolled around, our kids thought candy was a new meal, food group and dessert topping. Most of our conversations would go (and still go) something like this.

Kids: (6:30 a.m.)"Daddy, can we have some candy?"
Parents: "Not till after lunch."
Kids: (6:35 a.m.) "Mommy, can we eat lunch so we can have some candy?" Parents: "Please stop asking for candy".
Kids: (All day and night) "Can we have some candy?"...

Whoever invented Halloween and the tradition of parents giving kids loads of candy in exchange for being really naughty if they aren't fed candy 24/7, must have worked for a candy company.

I don't think that Halloween was invented by a candy company. I think that it was invented by a company that makes candy wrappers. One year that company had a huge over run of wrappers. They got together with other candy wrapper companies who also happened to miscalculate their inventory needs to invent a holiday so that candy companies would order the wrappers to put around their candy that they needed to get into stores in time for parents to buy so that they could hand out to kids as they came by their homes on Halloween night. As a result your kids now want candy for breakfast. That's my theory.
