Aubrey and I had a chance to enjoy a quiet night by ourselves in the backyard. It was still close to 100 degrees in late July, Lisa was hanging out with Sydney and Hadley and it was just Aubrey, me, a margarita and the sprinkler. It seemed like a perfect moment to have a deep conversation with my very curious 4 year old. So I started talking to her about her cousin Brooke and the fact that her parents were no longer married. Coming from a divorced family, I thought she'd like to better understand our family dynamics of one Mimi, one Geegee and 3 Papas. "Aubrey, sometimes mommies and daddies don't stay together. Like Brooke's mommy and daddy. They aren't married anymore. But Brooke's daddy will always be her daddy. And brooke's mommy will always be her mommy." I went on to explain my family dynamics as the purple whale sprinkler kept our feet cool in the summer heat. Aubrey looked at me with her innocent big blue eyes and started to speak. Expecting some deep thought, for some reason, I instead heard wisdom reminiscent of Jack Handy of SNL's "Deep Thoughts". Aubrey said, "And the sprinkler will always be a sprinkler?" I chuckled, smiled and looked up into the colorful night sky. "Yes, Aubrey, the sprinkler will always be a sprinkler." She then asked the most important question of all. "Daddy, can we go have dessert, now?" Of course...
